Giants fight past Falcons, 34-31

The New York Giants kept alive their playoff hopes with a 34-31 overtime victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

Quarterback Eli Manning rebounded from a month’s worth of struggles to toss two touchdown passes to tight end Kevin Boss.

Boss should become a much bigger target for Manning now that the weather should start to make a turn for the worse.

Running back Brandon Jacobs had 39 yards on the ground and a touchdown before leaving with an injury.

The Giants could get right back into the thick of the NFC East race with a win next weekend.

Giants Snap Four-Game Losing Streak, Beat Falcons 34-31 in OT

It took 42 days, 24 quarters, and one overtime, but the New York Giants are finally winners again.

After starting the season 5-0 and being discussed with the Saints and the Colts as the best team in football, the Giants stumbled and lost four straight games. On Sunday, they got the taste of winning back in their mouths, as they handled the Atlanta Falcons at home, winning 34-31.

“There are not many better feelings than in a locker room after a win,” Giants QB Eli Manning said. “It was good to see the high-fives and the smiles, especially when you haven’t had that feeling for a while.”

Manning had his best day ever at the Meadowlands, throwing for over 300 yards for the first time at home. He finished 26-of-39 for 384 yards, with three touchdown passes.

The rest of the Giants didn’t have such a good day, despite the win. The Giants defense, which is without linebacker Antonio Pierce indefinitely, struggled to hold onto a 31-17 lead, and gave ground to the Falcons in the second half.

Giants RB Brandon Jacobs was en route to a productive day, rushing 11 times for 39 yards and a touchdown, before leaving the game with a leg injury in the third quarter. Jacobs remained sidelined for the fourth quarter and overtime, and Giants coach Tom Coughlin did not give an update on Jacobs’ condition after the game.

The Giants move to 6-4 on the season, and prepare for a short week, as they face off against the Denver Broncos on Thanksgiving night.

Giants nipped by Chargers, 21-20

The New York Giants were just seconds away from a victory before a late touchdown sealed a win for the San Diego Chargers, 21-20.

Many felt this was the perfect opportunity for the struggling Giants to get back on track against a West Coast team traveling all the way to the East Coast.

However, the Giants struggled to run the ball against a team that hasn’t been able to stop anyone on the ground this season.

Quarterback Eli Manning made some plays, but Phillip Rivers just made a few more, including a late touchdown toss for the win.

New York is now 4-4 and in danger of falling out of the NFC East and playoff races.

Chargers Shock Giants on Last-Minute TD

With the Giants on a three-game losing streak, the G-Men appeared three minutes away from sealing a win against the San Diego Chargers and reversing their luck as of late.

Instead, Chargers QB Philip Rivers (who the Giants originally selected in the 2004 draft with the No. 4 overall pick) tossed the 18-yard winning touchdown to WR Vincent Jackson with 29 seconds left as the Chargers stunned the Giants, 21-20, sending the Giants to their fourth straight loss.

The Chargers opened up with a 7-0 lead on a Rivers-to-Jackson 10-yard TD in the second quarter, in a first half where both defenses surprisingly dominated. The teams went into halftime tied 7-7 after Eli Manning tied the game with a 6-yard TD pass to WR Steve Smith.

The Chargers scored a quick TD in the third quarter, then watched as the Giants reeled off 13 straight points to take a 20-14 lead with three minutes left.

In fact, Rivers has the Giants to thank for the chance to win the game. He threw an interception to set up the Giants’ last field goal, however; they returned the ball to the Chargers’ 4-yard-line, and had they been able to punch the ball into the end zone, the game would have been out of reach for the Chargers.

Instead, the Giants committed offensive holding on the first down play from the 4-yard-line, resulting in a 10-yard penalty. They failed to score a touchdown on the suddenly extended field, kicked the field goal, then watched as Rivers and the Chargers marched down the field one final time to win the game.

“We had a chance and you can’t leave that team in the game,” said Manning, who finished 25 of 33 for 215 yards and two touchdowns. “You can’t leave that team an opening. They are good and talented and if you have a chance to end it, you have to end it.”

This is the Giants’ first four-game losing streak since 2006, and they enter their Week 10 bye with more questions than answers.

Giants embarassed by Eagles, 40-17

The New York Giants looked nothing like a Super Bowl contender in an embarassing 40-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

A lot of folks thought the Giants would come out ready to play after getting thumped by the New Orleans Saints.

Instead, New York fans had to endure another terrible performance from Eli Manning, who has reverted back to his old self.

Manning looked much improved early in the season but now looks like he is a clueless rookie again.

The defense is struggling as well. The team can’t stop the run or the pass, and the front four can’t be counted upon to do everything for the unit.

Giants Hammered by Eagles, Third Place in NFC East

From first to (almost) worst in three short hours.

Three weeks ago, the NY Giants were being mentioned along with the Colts and the Saints as among the elite in the league, with a 5-0 record that didn’t seem to capture their dominance. Perhaps we were all a little quick to coronate them (or we forgot that said 5-0 record came about thanks to the Redskins, Raiders, and Chiefs), as the Giants quickly fell apart the next two weeks in losses to the Saints and Cardinals.

And thus, the Giants traveled to Philadelphia in a first-place battle for the NFC East… but it appeared that only one team showed up, as the Eagles absolutely steamrolled the Giants, 40-17.

The game got out of hand quickly, with Eagles FB Leonard Weaver busting up the seams for a 41-yard touchdown on the Eagles’ third play of the game. With RB Brian Westbrook sidelined by a concussion he sustained a week before against the Redskins, Eagles coach Andy Reid shocked the world by not turning away from the run – instead, he handed the ball to Weaver, who spent his first four NFL season in Seattle – and watched the magic unfold.

On the Giants’ third offensive snap, Eli Manning threw a ball that looked like it was thrown right at Eagles’ CB Asante Samuel. Samuel returned it 37 yards to the Giants’ 10, where the Eagles punched in a Donovan McNabb-to-TE Brent Celek TD on third down to make it 13-0 (with a missed PAT).

The Giants only challenged once more after that, narrowing the score to 16-7 right after the two minute warning with an Eli Manning pass to Kevin Boss, however; the Eagles immediately struck back with a 54-yard TD to DeSean Jackson to make it 23-7. Then, as the Giants tried to drive down the field for a last-second field goal, Manning threw another pick, this time leading to a 23-yard score for Jeremy Maclin on the other end to make it 30-7 by halftime.

The game was never really close in the second half, as the Giants fumbled the opening kickoff, allowing the Eagles to kick a field goal and bump the lead to 33-7. While the Giants reeled off 10 unanswered points and had the Eagles feeling slightly nervous at the start of the fourth quarter, a 66-yard scoring run from LeSean McCoy of the Eagles iced the game away, putting it out of reach for the Giants, who lost their third straight game.

“You don’t expect it when you win five straight,” Manning said. “You’re feeling good, you’re feeling great and then, to lose three in a row especially, you just don’t feel like you’re playing your best.”

The Giants look to rebound against Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers this week.
