Giants sign A. Rolle

The New York Giants have signed free agent safety Antrel Rolle to a five-year contract worth $37 million, the richest deal ever awarded to a player at his position.

The Giants were determined to make some upgrades in their secondary after an abysmal defensive performance last season, some of which was blamed on the coordinator.

Part of New York’s problem was the loss of safety Kenny Phillips early in the season to a knee injury. He is expected to return for the 2010 season.

Rolle said he was ecstatic over the deal, and rightfully so, and he praised the Giants for being a first-class organization that made it known he was wanted there.

The Arizona Cardinals cut Rolle to avoid paying him a bonus but with the hope of being able to re-sign him at a cheaper price after he was released. That didn’t work out too well for them.

Pierce says he is no longer a Giant

Veteran linebacker Antonio Pierce claims that he has been released by the New York Giants after five years with the team.

Despite being cut, Pierce said that he feels great and is looking forward to the future opportunities he knows he will see coming his way.

Pierce was played on injured reserve on November 30 this past season because of a bulging disc in his neck. He had one year remaining on his current contract.

Pierce was once the team’s leading tackler but was most well known for his involvement with Plaxico Burress the night he shot himself in the thigh with his gun.

The linebacker had initially tried to help the wide receiver cover up the shooting so that neither player would get into any kind of trouble.

Burress Vows to Play Again

In an interview with his former coach, Bill Cowher (who now works as a correspondent for CBS), imprisoned former NY Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress promised that he intends on playing professional football again, once he’s released from prison.

Burress, who shot himself in the leg in a N.Y. nightclub back in November 2008, was sentenced to two years in prison for possession of an unlicensed handgun, an offense taken very seriously in New York. With good behavior, Plax is expected to serve about 20 months of jail time altogether.

During his incarceration, Burress has been taking steps to maintain his physical condition, as he reportedly works out four times a week.

“It’s not LA Fitness or Bally’s, but I do push-ups, sit-ups,” Burress said in the interview. “I make do.”

For his part, Cowher spoke with the New York Post after the interview and seemed convinced that Plax’s convictions were genuine.

“He looked me in the eye. I believe he was sincere,” Cowher told the newspaper. “I think I know him well enough to know that …

“He admittedly blames no one except himself. He’s had a lot of time to reflect. He’s had great, unwavering support from his wife. … It’s been an eye-awakening situation for him. He had a daughter born when he was in prison. It’s very sobering to be in there. When you walk through the door, and you listen to him talk, you can see it’s very genuine.”

Giants hire Fewell as defensive coordinator

The New York Giants have hired former Buffalo Bills interim head coach Perry Fewell as their new head coach.

The Giants fired Bill Sheridan after just one year as the defensive coordinator, replacing Steve Spagnuolo.

Fewell was the defensive coordinator with the Bills until the team fired head coach Dick Jauron and pushed him into that role.

He was let go by the Bills at the end of the season, but did interview for the head coaching job. He gave up on that job, though, feeling he wasn’t a top candidate.

Fewell also has a relationship with head coach Tom Coughlin, and the defense has a lot of talented players to work with.

Giants fire defensive coordinator

The New York Giants have fired defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan after just one year in the position.

Sheridan took over the job from Steve Spagnuolo, who was hired as the new head coach of the St. Louis Rams.

However, Sheridan never could find the same success that Spagnuolo did with the same players.

In fact, the defense was embarassingly bad down the stretch and gave up more than 80 points in their final two games.

The defense finished third from the bottom in the NFL, which is unacceptable given the amount of talent on that side of the ball.

Giants embarassed by Vikings, 44-7

The New York Giants put forth an absolutely embarassing effort in a 44-7 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

The Giants were eliminated from playoff contention last week in another embarassing loss, so it seems like they just mailed it in.

Both sides of the ball were equally as disturbing in terms of lack of performance and lack of effort.

The defense gave up over 300 passing yards and four touchdowns to Brett Favre while the offensive didn’t score until the fourth quarter.

Their lack of effort down the stretch doesn’t bode well for head coach Tom Coughlin, though his job is certainly not in danger yet.

Giants embarassed by Panthers, 41-9

The New York Giants turned in a disgraceful effort in an embarassing, 41-9 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

With a possible playoff berth on the line the final two weeks, New York looked like a team content to watch the postseason on television.

A defense that was once considered one of the most fierce in the NFL gave up three touchdown passes to quarterback Matt Moore.

They also allowed running back Jonathan Stewart to have a big day thanks to numerous missed tackles.

New York has certainly been hit hard by injuries, but to lose by so many points at home to a mediocre team is really hard to swallow.

Giants crush Redskins, 45-12

The New York Giants came into Monday night’s road game on upset alert, but there was no reason to worry.

The Giants took care of business and then some, crushing the division rival Washington Redskins, 45-12.

New York embarassed the Redskins in just about every facet of the game and didn’t let off the gas until late in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Eli Manning continues to play well and make all of the right throws. When he plays well, so do the Giants.

The win moves the Giants closer to a wild card berth, but they might have to win their last two games to get into the playoffs.

Giants Dominate Redskins on MNF, 45-12

The New York Giants unmercifully ended the Redskins season two weeks early.

With news of the firing of GM Vinny Cerrato still bringing smiles to the FedEx Field faithful, 70,000 snow-covered fans had to watch as a division rival hammered their team on national television in a 45-12 blowout.

The Giants, who started the season 5-0 and were being discussed as one of the best teams in the NFL in the early-going, found themselves in a must-win situation last night, as a win would still leave them a game behind the Cowboys and the Packers in the NFC wild card discussion.

“We felt we can play at that caliber that we were playing at the beginning of the year,” said Ahmad Bradshaw, who scored two first-half touchdowns. “We came out fired up. This was a must-win. I told everybody before we went out: ‘I need the whole team to come with us.’ And that’s how we played — together.”

“We were the team that had more at stake, obviously — and played that way,” New York coach Tom Coughlin said. “We always talk about being the team that demonstrates greater purpose. And we did.”

The Redskins, on the other hand, came into the game 4-9, and only had their jobs to play for. Considering the way the year has gone… it looked like some Redskins players wouldn’t mind being on their way out at the end of the season, likely along with head coach Jim Zorn.

Giants fall to Eagles, 45-38

The New York Giants hung tough but simply lacked the firepower to take down the Philadelphia Eagles in a 45-38 loss.

The Giants got a tremendous effort out of quarterback Eli Manning but let it all go to waste.

The defense, which has been the backbone of this team in the past, has really floundered in 2009.

The talented defensive line is unable to get any pressure on the quarterback, and the result is a lot of big pass plays are being given up.

If head coach Tom Coughlin can’t clean this up in a hurry, the Giants will be sitting home watching the postseason.
